La Mixteca

7822 Portland Ave. S.
Bloomington, MN 55420
952-884-1985

So two days ago I called Taqueria La Concha because I was in the mood for some tacos. It turns out they were closed as it was a little past 9:00pm so I googled La Mixteca and called their number. I was relieved to find out that they were in fact, open so I proceeded to make the drive. I figured I could hit up Otto’s Liquor store for some beer afterwards since its practically right next door. At first I was a little weary looking at the prices and then at what was behind the sneeze-guard on the line. I ordered 3 steak tacos and waited… They cost about $2.25 if my memory serves me correctly, and I thought that this was a little expensive, but don’t worry because you pay AFTER your eat (or at least I did). I don’t know if they guy working behind the counter was too busy to ring me up that moment or if he was just in a really trusting mood. The tacos were pretty decent sized compared to other taco places I have been to. They tasted pretty good overall, but I still think the price is a little high and would probably only go to LaMixteca when Taqueria La Concha is closed.

98 Pounds Buffet

824 West. 98th Street, Bloomington, MN 55420
952- 881- 1088

I just went to 98 Pounds Buffet for the second time in a year and I wish I would go more. Probably some of the best Chinese buffet food I’ve eaten and at around 12 bucks you can’t go wrong. They have pretty good sushi as well as dim sum, crayfish, oysters, and crab legs. The only problem I had was that some of the items were refilled too slowly. We had seats close to the buffet, but some asshole still managed to snipe the last 2 shrimp dumpling right from under me. I sat there for a good 25-30 minutes and they never refilled them before I left so I didn’t get to try them, but damn they looked good. No worries though, I just hit up the sushi again. So If you want some good Chinese buffet at a decent price, you should really get to 98 Pounds buffet in Bloomington right off of 35W!

Jun Bo Chinese restaurant

7717 Nicollet Ave.
Richfield MN 55423
Phone: (612) 866-6888

If you haven’t tried a hot pot before (it’s like Chinese fondue), then you need to go try one at Jun Bo in Richfield. It costs about 35 dollars and you get your choice of meats, vegetables, and seafood to add to the your spicy yet delicious broth as it sits on a hotplate boiling at your table. You can pick any combination up to 12 items if I remember correctly. My friends and I usually get double beef, dumpling, double peeled shrimp, double rice noodles, cilantro, golden mushrooms, and water crest. The other reason I like Jun Bo is their dim sum (especially the fresh shrimp dumplings and sui mai). The prices are ok, but not cheap, but the food is really good and the fact that it’s right off of 494 makes for about a 5 minute drive from me, witch I like a lot.

First Wok Chinese Restaurant

415 East 78th Street
Bloomington, MN 55420-1251
(952) 881-2413

1st Wok is one of my favorite Chinese places close by. They aren’t fancy at all and the building could even be considered a little run down, but they have some excellent authentic food and really good service. I really like their sesame shrimp as well as the beef and broccoli. I usually pair one of these up with the pupu tray (their shrimp toast is the shit). They also have that good sweet and sour sauce there… you know the red stuff that actually has flavor. Not like the shit that you dunk your McDonalds chicken nuggets in. I have tried many other things off the menu and have never been disappointed. I don’t know the name of the owner, but he is a really friendly and funny guy. Weather you haven’t been there in a few days, weeks, months, or ever, you are usually greeted with a “Ooh how ah you? Long time no see!” The prices aren’t as good as they used to be, but well worth it for the quality of food and the service. Pretty much anytime you call in for take out they say “that be bout 10 minute”, and they are always true to this timeframe. So go check out 1st Wok and let me know what you think.

Kimson Vietnamese Cuisine

(952) 885-0230
8654 Lyndale Ave S
Bloomington, MN 55420

Kimson is a place I frequent on a regular basis. I have a sick fetish/passion whatever term you prefer for their sautéed beef and potatoes. They are unlike anything I have ever eaten and of the few places that I have had them, Kimson definitely does ‘em them the best. I also like the spicy lemon grass chicken wings. They are seriously some of the best wings I’ve eaten, right up there with Shorty and Waggs/Country Bar. The spring rolls have a very home-made taste and look to them (awesome). Prices are pretty decent. I guess the only gripe I have with Kimson is their pho… Not only is it not as good as it used to be, but last time I was there it was even served in a smaller bowl. I would definitely advise you to check them out. Now if we can just get them to make their pho the way they used to and put it in a bigger bowl…

Welcome to Twin Cities Food Blog

Hey people! welcome to my new blog that rates and talks about my experiences with various places to eat around the twin cities. Now off the bat I have to tell you all that I'm no writer. I just love food and I like talking about it. So I dont need the grammar and spelling police bitching about all my little mistakes. The point of this blog is more for those of you deciding weather or not to try that restaraunt that you always drive by or hear about. That, or if you find after reading any of this that you have similar tastes and opinions and want some new suggestions for places you havent tried yet.
